Michael Bühler, a partner of JONES DAY and senior member of its Global Disputes practice, is a seasoned international arbitration lawyer, that has acted in close to 200 arbitrations, predominantly as counsel but also as an arbitrator, under the rules of leading arbitral institutions, such as ICC, ICSID, ICDR, SCC, WIPO, CEPANI, DIS, as well as the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules.  His focus is on complex disputes mainly in the energy and construction sectors, but involving also M&A and corporate transactions, financing arrangements, investment protection, joint ventures, IP rights, and agency and distributorship agreements for clients from the private & public sector from around the world.

Michael was a member of the ICC Court (1997-2009), co-chair of the Task Force of the ICC Commission on Arbitration on the Revision of the 2012 ICC Arbitration Rules (2008-2011), and most recently acted as the lead consultant for the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (OHADA) regarding the reform of its uniform arbitration act and the creation of a uniform mediation act. 

Michael is a member of the Düsseldorf, Paris and New York bars and holds a Ph.D. from the Law School of Geneva University and a LL.M. from the Law School of Columbia University.  He is based at JONES DAY’s office in Paris.
